Service members will receive no notification from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) regarding health-care coverage under the Affordable Care Act for the 2014 tax year. This means that when service members are preparing their federal income tax returns, they are responsible for indicating on their 1040 forms the months in which they and their family members are covered for health care. In order to indicate coverage, filers must provide Social Security numbers for each family member. Persons who cannot show that they are covered will have to make a “shared responsibility payment” with their 2014 federal income taxes. More information is available on the DFAS Web site at www.dfas.mil.
