The Defense Department wants the Web site WikiLeaks to return the thousands of classified documents relating to conduct of the war in Afghanistan between January 2004 and December 2009. The documents, some 15,000 of which have yet to be published, were stolen and could endanger the lives of U.S. troops and allies, as well as Afghan civilians, DoD spokesman Geoff Morrell said during an Aug. 5 press conference at the Pentagon. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has asked the FBI and Justice Department to look into the matter as well.
