November is National Marrow Awareness Month, and officials with the C.W. Bill Young/Department of Defense Marrow Donor Program are seeking marrow donor registrants. The program, named for Congressman C.W. Bill Young (R-Fla.), accepts only military donors. It operates in conjunction with the National Marrow Donor Program, which brings donors together nationally and internationally in a confidential and secure data search system. To join the registry, participants fill out a short DoD consent form and have a swab taken inside their mouth. They receive an official registration card, and are added to the NMDP national registry through the DoD Marrow Donor Program. The DoD program is open to individuals age 18 to 60 who are in good health and are active duty military, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserve or DoD civilian employees, or immediate family members of active duty service members.
