The Defense Department announced Feb. 4 a revamped plan to pursue strategic goals in space. Under the new National Security Space Strategy, the armed forces will focus on protecting U.S. interests in protecting military operations and intelligence gathering in an increasingly crowded arena. The mission will include building international partnerships to thwart potential adversaries, dealing with the large amounts of orbital debris and radio frequency interference, and energizing the space industrial base. More details of the new strategy will emerge when the Obama administration submits its proposed defense budget for 2012 to Congress.
