Michael B. Donley took the oath as the 22nd secretary of the Air Force during an Oct. 17 ceremony at the Air Force Memorial in Arlington,Va. He succeeds Michael W. Wynne, who was fired along with chief of staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley, by Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates in June after questions arose about security of the nuclear weapons inventory and the acquisition of a new tanker aircraft to replace the aging fleet of KC-135s. “We are making great strides in strengthening our nuclear enterprise and restoring acquisition excellence,” Donley said after Gates swore him in. Donley spent more than 30 years as a national security professional, including a tour with the Army’s XVIII Airborne Corps from 1972 to 1975.
