Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr. succeeded fellow Marine Gen. Gohn R. Allen as commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) during a Feb. 10 ceremony in Kabul. The command encompasses all NATO and U.S. military assets in Afghanistan. Key among Dunford’s duties will be oversight of the withdrawal of the 66,000 U.S. troops from the country, and the transition to a climate in which the Afghan police and military will assume most of the responsibility for their nation’s security.
