Troops deploying to Liberia and other countries in West Africa face little chance of contracting the deadly Ebola virus they were sent to fight, Army health experts said Oct. 13. “They actually have a greater risk of contracting malaria,” said Lt. Gen. Patricia D. Horoho, the Army surgeon general and commander of U.S. Army Medical Command, as she addressed an audience at the 2014 Association of the U.S. Army annual meeting and exposition in Washington. The mission requires troops to help build treatment facilities, not treat patients, one expert said.
