Fifteen Marines who recently graduated from boot camp became the first women to complete their first week of infantry training. The 15 women were selected from 119 comrades who finished basic training at Parris Island, S.C., earlier this year. They were among 19 classmates who volunteered to join the Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry-East, at Camp Geiger N.C. Of the group, four ultimately opted to attend Marine Combat Training instead of infantry school. The candidates who stayed on are required to meet the same standards as their male counterparts. They will receive their infantry job designator status once they complete the course.
