Five Likely Killed by Fratricide

Five U.S. service members died in Afghanistan June 9, likely by accidental fire from their comrades. The five were taking part in a security mission with the International Security Assistance Force. Initial word from the Pentagon indicated the victims were in contact with enemy fighters at the time. “Tragically, there is the possibility that fratricide may have been involved,” Pentagon spokesman Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a June 10 statement. “The incident is under investigation.”
