Two former Navy SEALs – Mark Daniel Kennedy, 43, and Jeffrey Keith Reynolds, 44, were found dead in their cabin Feb. 20 on board the Maersk Alabama. The freighter was docked at Port Victoria, Seychelles, at the time. Media reports indicated that a significant amount of brown heroin was found in their cabin, but there has been no official confirmation that they died of overdoses. Maersk Alabama gained world notoriety when Somali pirates hijacked the vessel in April 2009. The saga surrounding its rescue by the destroyer Bainbridge, and the exploits of Alabama skipper Richard Phillips, was adapted for screenplay. The movie “Captain Phillips” received six nominations for Academy Awards. Since the attack, Maersk and other shipping companies frequently use former SEALs and other combat-trained experts to provide security during voyages.
