The Defense Department’s brain trust needs to conduct a thorough assessment of equipment still on the ground in Afghanistan, to determine what is worth shipping home and what is not, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) recommended in a Dec. 19 report. The GAO report cited DoD figures showing that more than $36 billion worth of equipment is still in Afghanistan. It would cost as much as $5.7 billion to return it to the U.S., or transfer it to another agency.
