Army Maj. Jason Wright, the military lawyer who had been assigned to defend an accused mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S., has resigned. National Public Radio reported Aug. 31 that Wright became disillusioned with the government’s lack of interest in offering “due process” to the defendant, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Wright termed the government’s actions as reflective of “abhorrent leadership,” and said prosecutors were setting up a “show trial.” Mohammed was captured in 2003 and has yet to be tried. If convicted, he could face execution.
