Reacting to reports of possible illegal disbursement of reenlistment bonuses in several states, the National Guard Bureau is launching a probe of related fraud and abuse. If the allegations prove true, the bureau plans to revamp fraud detection procedures. The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee first reported about possible fraud and abuse in a story about the California National Guard. According to the Bee, as much as $100,000 was handed out to soldiers improperly, under a mismanaged system that essentially operated as a slush fund. Federal auditors who reportedly discovered the possible wrongdoing have forwarded their findings to the FBI and Internal Revenue Service.
