Service members on duty in some Japanese prefectures can qualify for an additional $50 per month in hardship pay, effective April 1. The Defense Department authorized the additional pay in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. Military members serving in Tokyo Capital Region, as well as Aichi, Kanagawa, Akita, Aomori, Chiba, Fukushima, Gunma, Ibaraki, Iwate, Miyagi, Nagano, Niigata, Saitama, Shizouka, Tochigi, Yamagata, and Yamanashi prefectures are eligible. They will receive the additional pay automatically. Service members assigned to temporary duty in those areas for more than 30 days will also receive the pay.
