The living victims and surviving family members of those who died during the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting rampage conducted by a fellow soldier at Fort Hood, Texas, have received Purple Heart medals. “We honor the memories of the 13 souls laid to eternal rest [and] pay tribute to their sacrifice,” base commander Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland said during the April 10 ceremony there. Capt. Nidal Hasan, a psychiatrist, also wounded 30 other persons before he was shot by military police. He was convicted of murder in August 2013 and sentenced to death.
