The House soon will decide by voice vote the fate of a measure that would allow military spouses to retain their states of residency in cases when they move and reside with their service-member sponsors. The bill, H.R. 5428, would amend the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to end the policy that forbade spouses from using addresses at new duty stations for purposes of taxation and voting. A spouse of a service member would be able to claim the same state of residence as the service member, regardless of whether he or she actually ever lived in that state.
