Anticipating sharp increases in vehicle traffic near Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Md., and Madigan Army Medical Center, Wash., the Defense Department approved grants from Office of Economic Adjustment that would pay for transportation-access improvements. Walter Reed, now located at the former Navy National Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., will receive $40 million. The city of Lakewood, Wash., will receive $5.7 million to improve the Freedom Bridge overpass near Madigan’s main gate. Both facilities expanded under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) process.
