Iran released the 10 Navy sailors it took into custody and held for 16 hours, after one of their riverine command boats drifted into Iranian waters Jan. 13, near Farsi Island, according to numerous media reports. Navy Times reported that the sailors were allowed to leave in the vessels, but that Iranian authorities had seized the global positioning systems (GPS). Early reports that Iran agreed to release the sailors – nine men and one woman – only after an official U.S. apology were later dismissed by high government officials.
