Service members who served in Iraq since Sept. 1, 2010, or Afghanistan since Dec. 1, 2009, are authorized to wear newly authorized bronze campaign stars, to accompany their Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals. The campaign stars mark participation in Operation New Dawn, which began with the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Consolidation III, which began when President Obama ordered a 30,000-troop strength increase in Afghanistan. Holders of the respective campaign medals can wear a bronze campaign star for each campaign in which they participated.
