The Army no longer will refer to the way it conducts joint operations with other nations and parties as “Multi-Domain Battle.” Service leadership believes the new name, “Multi-Domain Operations,” better reflects the way such missions and exercises are conducted, Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, the chief of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), told an audience during a May 22 conference held in Hawaii by the Association of the U.S. Army. Since the original term was coined in 2016, the Defense and State departments sought a term that would better reflect the fact that such joint operations did not necessarily “cycle into battle.”
