A report by Army Maj. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence in Afghanistan, sharply criticizes U.S. and coalition operations there. According to the report, released Jan. 4 by the non-partisan Center for a New American Security, U.S. intelligence assets still do not have a sufficient understanding of the environment or people in the area. Flynn and his co-authors urged better integration among intelligence-gathering components, paying closer attention to geographic distinctions, funneling data to “information brokers at regional commands for analysis and dissemination, and finding the best people to perform intelligence-gathering jobs.
