As of last Sept. 30, 1,920,000 retirees collected military retirement pay, according to the latest Defense Department Office of the Actuary’s Statistical Report on the Military Retirement System. The Defense Department paid $40.2 billion in non-disability retirement pay in 2010. As of Sept. 30, 1.47 million non-disabled retirement collected the pay during fiscal year 2010, which began Oct. 1, 2009. During the same time frame, DoD reported that 93,000 disabled retirees received $1.38 billion in retired pay. Another 357,000 reserve retirees were on the rolls as of that date. Reserve retirees collected $4.89 billion in retired pay during that year. Another 294,000 survivors of retired military members were on the rolls as of the end of fiscal year 2010. Survivors received $3.65 billion in annuities from the defense department during that time frame.
