Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., is calling for a thorough review of military hazing, following reports that a recruit died possibly as a result of hazing at Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot, S.C. “We in the federal government still lack a clear understanding of hazing and the military’s response to the problem, because the Department of Defense ahs never conducted a basic evaluation or developed a unified system to track these incidents,” Speier said. Speier presented her request to Reps. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and Adam Smith, D-Wash., the committee’s ranking member.
