The Navy christened its newest littoral combat ship, the Detroit, during an Oct. 18 ceremony at the shipyard where it was built. Detroit “is tailor-made for our 21st century operations and maritime security missions, from the wide expanses of the Pacific to the littorals of Africa,” Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said at the ceremony at Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard in Wisconsin. Like other LCS vessels, Detroit will be able to operate in very shallow coastal waters and can be configured to conduct countermine and antisubmarine operations. It can reach speeds greater than 40 knots in 20 feet of water.
