Sailors who are leaving the service should do everything they can to make sure their medical and dental records are turned in, the Navy Personnel Command is advising. While commanders, officers in charge, and military medical treatment facilities are ultimately responsible for transferring to the Department of Veterans Affairs the records of separating or retiring members, individual sailors can help make sure such transactions are done correctly. Sailors who do not have their records should make it known to responsible parties, and do whatever they can to help them track down those records, NPC stated. The VA only can process claims once the agency has received proof of a veteran’s service.
