Veterans who became sick because of exposure to tainted water at Camp Lejeune, N.C., soon could receive compensation and care for their maladies. The Department of Veterans Affairs announced Dec. 17 that persons exposed to chemicals that leaked from storage tanks on the base between 1953 and 1987 could be treated at VA facilities for kidney and liver cancer, leukemia, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, multiple myeloma, scleroderma, Parkinson’s disease, and aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. Treatment and compensation should become available as soon as VA works out regulatory details.
