Roughly 50 former ordnance, quartermaster and transportation officers donned insignia of the newly formed Army Logistics Branch during a Jan. 9 ceremony at Fort Lee, Va. The rite marked the first time officers from the former separate branches donned Logistics devices, which bear a ship’s steering wheel, crossed by a key, a cannon, and a stylized star in the center,. The command was established Jan. 1 to oversee a cadre of officers who are skilled in all three disciplines. “Today, and into the foreseeable future, logistics officers must be able to operate effectively amidst uncertainty and unpredictability in the full spectrum of operations,” said Maj. Gen. Mitchell H. Stevenson, head of the Army’s Combined Arms Support Services Command and commanding general at Fort Lee. In total, some 10,000 officers will eventually join the Logistics Branch. The ordnance, quartermaster and transportation branches will stay around as well.
