On July 20 the United States honored a branch of the military for the first time with a commemorative coin, the Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar. Following a ceremony at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., the base became the first place in the nation where the public could purchase in person both proof and uncirculated Marine Corps dollars. During the initial issue period of July 20 until August 22nd , the proof dollar will be available from the United States Mint online, by telephone and by mail for $35, and the uncirculated dollar for $33, plus $4.95 per order for shipping and handling. After August 22nd, the proof coin will go for $39 and the uncirculated dollar for $35. Only 600,000 total have been authorized for mintage. Visit www.usmint.gov, or call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).
