Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Richard A. Jibson received the Navy Cross Medal during an April 22 ceremony at Marine Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms, Calif., for heroism he displayed during a May 28, 2012, combat operation in Afghanistan. The official record shows that Jibson exposed himself to enemy fire several times during several firefights over the course of five hours, in order “to provide suppressive fire and support.” Jibson was attached to Regimental Combat Team 6 and serving as an advisor to Georgian troops at the time. “I’m not a superhero. I was just doing my job and I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the outstanding group of men I was with,” Jibson said as he accepted the nation’s second-highest award for combat valor.
