Personal data of 10,554 Marines was “improperly posted” online recently by Penn State University. The information, which included names and Social Security numbers, came from a contracted study by Penn State concerning rifle range requalification records from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C., from Jan. 2004 through Dec. 2006. The data was on the internet for as long as 11 days before being discovered and removed. Marine officials are contacting each person affected and have established a call center. MarAdmin 443/07 advises Marines to review their credit reports for financial activities they did not initiate.
