With the flu season approaching, the Marine Corps has ordered all commands to immunize 90 percent of all active and reserve members by Dec. 1. At that point, inoculations will continue for all Marines and sailors who have not yet received influenza vaccinations until the supply of the vaccine is gone. Marines in flying status will be grounded for 72 hours after receiving flu vaccines, unless cleared by flight surgeons. Pregnant women and persons with asthma or reactive airway disease will receive injectable vaccinations rather than nasal mists. Some exemptions apply to persons sensitive to inoculations or allergic to eggs. The Marine Corps is encouraging all dependent family members and retirees to get flu vaccines as well. Marines and sailors who get their vaccines through TRICARE providers must provide documentation to their commands. More details are spelled out in MARADMIN 515/11, available online at www.marines.mil.
