The Color Sergeant of the Marine Corps’ duties center around ceremonial activities, serving as the service’s representative at White House functions and accompanying the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Team and Silent Drill Platoon on tours of the country. "The color sergeant is the senior sergeant in the Marine Corps and as such serves as an example in appearance, performance, and leadership for all noncommissioned officers to emulate," the administrative message states. Commands who believe they have a qualified candidate in their midst can submit nominations to Sgt. Maj.
