While stopping short of saying the Army one day could consider drafting women, Army Secretary John McHugh said that the expansion of combat roles for females might open the door to a debate at least. Registering with the Selective Service System “will have to be one of those things considered very carefully,” McHugh said during an Oct. 12 keynote speech at the Association of the U.S. Army’s annual convention in Washington. The Washington Examiner newspaper reported that McHugh conceded that the notion of drafting women would spark an “emotional discussion and debate.”
