John McHugh was sworn in as secretary of the Army by President Obama during a Sept. 21 Pentagon ceremony. He brings to the position more than 16 years of experience while serving in Congress, including stints as ranking minority member of the House Armed Services personnel subcommittee, the House Army Caucus, and the U.S. Military Academy Board of Visitors. He was born in Watertown, N.Y., the home of the Army’s Fort Drum and 10th Mountain Division. As the Army’s top-ranking civilian, he will oversee an annual budget of more than $200 billion, as well as 1.1 million active, National Guard, and reserve soldiers, 221,000 civilian employees, contract personnel and more than 14 million acres of land.
