Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Steven Giordano has resigned. Navy Times reported that Giordano decided to leave his office May 21, after the service’s inspector general launched an investigation amid reports from “allegations he fostered a toxic work environment.” The Navy Times story stated that there was no clear indication whether Giordano would face any disciplinary action as a result of the ongoing investigation. Giordano assumed the role as the Navy’s senior enlisted member less than two years ago. The report stated that Giordano, a cryptologist by training, was beset by complaints that he never developed an “agenda” for his term.

Fleet Master Chief Russell Smith temporarily assumed Giordano’s MCPON duties on June 22. He will hold the position while the process of selecting a new senior enlisted sailor is underway. Additionally, Smith will continue to serve in his current job as senior enlisted leader for Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education.
