Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) activated the state Army National Guard April 27, to help restore order in Baltimore in the aftermath of riots that stemmed from the shooting death of a man by local police. Sections of the city devolved into violent chaos after the funeral of the man, Freddie Gray, which took place earlier in the day. Initial peaceful demonstrations devolved into looting and confrontations with the police. Rioters torched a neighborhood drugstore. When firefighters attempted to extinguish the blaze, the frenzied demonstrators slashed hoses. “Today’s looting and acts of violence will not be tolerated. I have put the Maryland National Guard on alert so they can be in position to deploy rapidly as needed,” Hogan said.
