Service members can now carry over more unused annual leave that they before would have lost, under a provision of this year’s defense bill. Under the old policy, no more than 60 days of unused leave could be carried over. Now, troops can hang on to 75 days of leave. The change came because many service members who were deployed in support of the war on terror never had a chance to use their leave, because of the high operations tempo. The change also allows service members who are deployed into combat zones or in support of contingency operations to take as long as four years to reduce their accrued leave from the maximum 120 days to the new 75-day limit.
