The Navy is canceling more scheduled deployments of vessels, due to funding shortfalls caused by sequestration. Among them are next month’s deployment of the frigate Rentz and the Los Angeles-class submarine Jefferson City, from Pearl Harbor Naval Station, Hawaii. The frigate Thach will return to San Diego from the U.S. Southern Command area of operations next month, ahead of schedule. The Norfolk Naval Station, Va.-based frigate Kauffman and hospital ship Comfort will not deploy to the Southern Command area of operations as well. The salvage ship Grasp will not leave its home port at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Va., for the U.S. European Command area of operation next month. The ships’ crews will remain in port, and conduct maintenance and training.
