The Navy has relaxed its policy that barred sailors from wearing neck and sleeve tattoos. Sailors now can wear one neck tattoo, as long as it does not exceed one inch in length in any direction. Visible tattoos below the elbow or knee are no longer restricted by size or amount. Sailors with sleeve tattoos are no longer barred from serving in recruit-training or recruit-command positions. The regulations stipulating that tattoos cannot run counter to good order and discipline, or bring discredit upon the Navy, remain in effect.
