The Navy and Air Force have announced their new Foreign Language Proficiency Pay programs. Each is increasing single-language proficiency pay from $200 per month to $500. and multiple-language proficiency from $300 monthly to $1,000. The expansion, directed by the Defense Department, groups foreign languages into "immediate investment," which garners the most pay, "strategic stronghold," and "other," which pays the least. Proficiency pay generally will no longer be paid for "abundant or surplus" languages, identified as Spanish, Tagalog, Portuguese, German, Italian, Russian, Korean and French, except for members who require one of the languages in their billet or language-designated assignment. At press time, the Army and Marine Corps had not yet announced their programs.
