Sailors from the frigate Vandegrift and 129th Rescue Wing teamed up with Coast Guard and National Guard assets to make contact with and rescue a stranded civilian family in the Pacific Ocean April 7, and provide aid to their sick baby girl. One-year-old Lyra Kaufman, daughter of Charlette and Eric Kaufman, was reported in stable condition when they reached her, the Navy reported. The child had become seriously ill with an undetermined condition when the Kaufmans radioed for help. The family was attempting an around-the-world trip on their 36-foot-sailboat, Rebel Heart, when the vessel became disabled. The child developed a severe fever and rash, which was worsening as time progressed. The Rebel Heart was situated some 900 miles off of the coast of Mexico when they issued their call for help. The child is recovering, the Navy said.
