The Navy is phasing out the SEAL limited duty officer (LDO) designator. Present SEAL LDOs will be given the opportunity to convert to unrestricted line officer designator status. Others will be allowed to continue as LDOs until they retire, if their retirement date falls within billet conversion timelines. Beginning Oct. 1, SEAL LDO billets will be converted to SEAL chief warrant officer or unrestricted line officer billets. More details are explained in NAVADMIN 107/12, available online at www.npc.navy.mil. Limited duty officers are technical experts who assume leadership roles when applying their specific skills. Generally, LDOs are selected from the enlisted ranks.
