Sailors assigned to designated combat areas will now be allowed to take advancement exams at alternate times. The change is designed to give Sailors the proper amount of time to study for advancement exams. Sailors who cannot participate in regularly scheduled exams may take an exam up to two months prior to a scheduled departure to one of the designated combat zones — currently Iraq, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa. Sailors who miss two exam cycles due to deployments in the combat zones will be allowed to take two make-up exams. If selected for advancement, their date of promotion will be backdated to the effective date of advancement for the previous cycle they missed.
