John Perryman, the Navy’s seventeenth Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, intends to dedicate his tenure as the service’s senior most enlisted sailor to forging confidence, character and competence throughout the fleet.
“I am committed to removing distractions that don’t matter, delivering training that does, and spotlighting excellence wherever it’s found,” Perryman said, as he took office during a change-of-command ceremony earlier this month.
“Our Navy must be manned by world-class sailors, led by the best warfighters at every level. You have my word – I will always fight for you, and for the families who stand by you,” Perryman said.
The Navy’s MCPON carries influence rather than direct command authority, and aims to shape decisions through advocacy and expertise on enlisted life. Perryman recognized that sailors depend upon “world-class facilities to work and live.”
Barracks, family housing, galleys, access to medical care, and other facilities and programs must be the best. The systems sailors use as they perform their jobs, he added, must be of the highest quality.
“This means fostering a culture of system ownership, strict procedural compliance, theoretical understanding, forceful backup, formality, and ongoing professional learning,” Perryman said.
Management of talent and continuous development, he added, would ensure “that every sailor sees a clear, attainable path toward mastery and positions of increased leadership.”
