Sailors nearing the end of their military service can now take advantage of a new program through which they can gain civilian work experience through industry training. The Navy unveiled its SkillBridge application portal in a recent service-wide announcement to all sailors nearing transition, command career counselors and command leadership.
Application portal instructions can be found here:
https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/Career-Management/Transition/SkillBridge/
The program is divided into four tiers:
• Tier one – for those with 180 days of service or fewer left, in pay grades E-5 and below.
• Tier two – for those with 120 days or fewer, in paygrades E-6 through E-9.
• Tier three – for those with 120 days or fewer, officers O-4 and below.
• Tier four – for those with 90 days or fewer, officers O-5 and above.
Certain conditions must be met for each tier. For example, Tier four applicants whose billets will be gapped because they participated in SkillBridge will not be approved. Also, anyone who received funding from the Navy for continuing education must complete it before entering SkillBridge. Officers who serve under a retention bonus also must complete their obligation. And while taking part in SkillBridge, sailors “are allowed to focus solely on full-time training with approved industry partners.”
Career counselors and the chain of command can provide more information. Policy-related questions should be directed to Navy_skillbridge.fct@navy.mil, or by calling (703) 604-5310.
