Selected Navy officers with prior enlisted service may now request retirement after eight years of commissioned service instead of the previously obligated 10 years, according to a new waiver policy approved by the Secretary of the Navy. The policy, announced in ALNAV 050/06, applies to officers in selected designators and will remain in effect through December 31, 2008. Designators that are not eligible for waiver are listed in the message. As the Navy has reduced end strength steadily since 2003, a small number of excess officers remain in some communities and pay grades above what is required to meet the Navy’s mission, said Vice Adm. John C. Harvey Jr., Chief of Naval Personnel. Interested officers should visit the Navy Personnel Command Web page at www.npc.navy.mil or contact their community manager for eligibility criteria and procedural guidance.
