With the success of the latest Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite tests, the Navy now has access to a complete constellation of such satellites, which provide the clearest and fastest voice, video and data transmissions to date. MUOS-4, which was launched Sept. 2, still will be re-situated into an orbit where it will be most useful. The Navy also plans to launch a final satellite in the series, MUOS-5, which would serve as a spare. Once fully operational, the MUOS network will outperform the legacy ultra-high frequency (UHF) network by a factor of 16, the Navy stated. In the meantime, the service is in the process of upgrading more than 55,000 field radios to make them compatible with MUOS.
