Married sailors will be entitled to 10 days’ non-chargeable leave when their wives give birth, under a policy that took effect when the 2009 defense bill became law in October. The leave must be used in conjunction with the birth, and within 365 days of the birth date. Commanders can grant the leave in conjunction with other ordinary leave, and have the option to approve it on an individual basis depending on unit mission requirements, operational circumstances, and the sailor’s billet. For more information, sailors should contact their command personnel office.
