The Navy clarified its regulations regarding tattoos, body art, mutilations and dental ornamentation in a message from the Chief of Navy Personnel on April 21. The message outlined four criteria to determine whether such items should be permitted: content, location, size and whether they are required for cosmetic purposes. Content: Any tattoo, body art, or brand that is obscene, sexually explicit or advocates discrimination of any sort is prohibited. Location: Tattoos, body art, or brands cannot be visible through the white uniform and cannot be on the head, face, neck or scalp regions. Size: Items on the lower arm can be no larger than the wearer’s hand, fingers closed. Dental ornamentation: Gold, platinum or other veneers or caps for decorative purposes is banned. The Navy also prohibits intentional mutilation of any sort. Waivers for pre-existing conditions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
