The Navy plans to evaluate and redesign the service dress uniforms for female officers and enlisteds, with a plan to begin testing them in the fleet sometime next spring. Junior enlisteds will receive uniforms that closely resemble those of their male counterparts. They will feature jumpers and traditional Dixie-cup hats. Senior enlisteds’ uniforms also will follow those of their male shipmates, adjusted for better fit. The changes will reflect a survey conducted among 1,000 female sailors last May, in which most respondents favored a traditional approach but did not want to be clad in uniforms completely identical to those worn by men.
